Coral Islands

Coral Islands are a central motif in Mulyana’s installation, representing an imaginative underwater ecosystem brought to life through intricate crochet techniques. The islands are composed of vibrant, modular forms that mimic the textures and structures of coral reefs, symbolizing both the beauty and fragility of marine life. These coral formations are designed to be adaptable, with individual modules that can be rearranged to create new configurations. This dynamic approach reflects Mulyana’s exploration of transformation and growth, encouraging viewers to see the coral as a metaphor for interconnectedness and the delicate balance of nature.

Mogus

Mulyana’s iconic octopus alter-ego, Mogus, serves as a bridge between his journey and the fantastical worlds he creates. Embodying adaptability and resilience, Mogus reflects themes of identity and transformation that are central to Mulyana’s practice. Often found inhabiting the Coral Islands, this enigmatic figure invites viewers into its whimsical yet poignant narrative. Through Mogus, Mulyana weaves a multilayered story—one that is both playful and deeplysymbolic—encouraging audiences to reflect on their own connection to the environment and engage in a personal dialogue with the work.

Food Monster

The Food Monster series playfully reimagines food as a catalyst for creativity and expression, by embruing ordinary, crocheted food objects with deeper meaning. Inspired by Mulyana’s experiences during the recent quarantine, these works transform everyday food objects into imaginative, character-driven sculptures. Each Food Monster is meticulously handcrafted using modular crochet techniques, resulting in vibrant, one-of-a-kind creations. The series explores themes of sustenance, community, and sustainability, encouraging viewers to experience beauty in the ordinary. Through Food Monster, Mulyana invites audiences to see creativity as an ever-present force—one that can emerge from even the most mundane aspects of daily life.

Costume & Performance

Mulyana extends his exploration of modular art into wearable forms through his hand-crocheted costumes and performances. These elaborate creations are more than visual spectacles; they serve as dynamic storytelling tools that foster audience engagement. Designed for modularity, the costumes can be assembled, disassembled, and reconfigured, echoing the themes of transformation and adaptability central to Mulyana’s work. In performance, they animate the art, turning the wearer into a living installation that dissolves the boundaries between artist, artwork, and audience. This performative element underscores the participatory nature of Mulyana’s practice, inviting viewers to actively engage with the evolving narrative.
